Everything about the weather and climate

How can we improve the accuracy of weather predictions? What about climate change and climatic anomalies? The weather and climate have considerable influence on our society and the economy. In addition to defining and predicting the weather and climate, it is also essential to assess the risk of natural hazards caused by certain weather or climate phenomena and to investigate the anthropogenic climate change.

The scientific discipline of meteorology conducts research on the past, current and future state of the atmosphere and the climate system as well as on the processes involved, based on the laws of physics and mathematical methods. The systematic observation of location- and time-dependent values on the earth’s surface and in the atmosphere provides the necessary data basis. In the area of meteorology, most data are collected through outdoor measurements or remote sensing methods (for instance, through the analysis of satellite data).

Meteorology covers a wide range of research areas and areas of application. The wide variety of the academic education equips graduates of the degree programme with the necessary skills to work in other professions in the field of physics and natural sciences as well, such as in the area of environmental protection, in the energy industry and in geoinformation services.
